Nursing Ausbildung in Germany from India
Indian applicants can do a nursing Ausbildung in Germany on the same terms as anyone else — but one thing is specific to India and catches almost everyone: Germany does not accept apostilles on Indian documents. Germany lodged an objection to India’s accession to the Apostille Convention, so your documents are verified through an administrative assistance procedure instead, which takes roughly two to three months and can only be started by a German authority.
The general process — three years of paid training, free tuition, B1 for the visa and often B2 for the school — is covered in the complete guide. This page is only about what is different if you are applying from India.
The apostille problem, explained properly
India joined the Hague Apostille Convention, and apostilles issued by the Ministry of External Affairs are accepted by most member countries. Germany is not one of them.
The German Mission in India states it directly: “the Federal Republic of Germany has lodged an objection to India’s accession”, which means the Convention does not apply between the two countries. An MEA apostille on your degree or school certificate does not make that document usable in Germany.
Instead, Indian documents are checked through verification by way of administrative assistance (Überprüfung im Wege der Amtshilfe). The German Mission explains that this is how German authorities and courts “check whether an Indian document is authentic and correct”.
| What you need to know | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who can start it | Only a German authority or court. “Private individuals cannot initiate a document verification.” You cannot walk into the embassy and ask for it. |
| How long it takes | Around six weeks from receipt of the complete request, plus roughly two weeks of postal and courier time in each direction. |
| What it costs | INR 45,000 per application, regardless of how many documents are submitted. The requesting authority is reimbursed, which in practice means you. |
Add two to three months for document verification, on top of certificate assessment, and understand that you cannot start it yourself — it is triggered by the German side. When an employer, school or authority asks for your documents, ask them immediately whether verification will be required and who will request it. Do not discover this in month nine.
Your realistic timeline from India
| Step | Time | Start it when |
|---|---|---|
| German from zero to B2 | 9–14 months | Month 1 |
| Collect and certify documents, arrange sworn translations | 1–2 months | Month 1 — no German needed |
| School certificate assessment | 2–6 months | Month 2 |
| Employer search and applications | 1–4 months | Once you have your language certificate |
| Document verification via Amtshilfe, if required | ~2–3 months | Triggered by the German authority |
| Visa appointment and decision | Varies — check VFS availability early | After the contract |
Total from a standing start: realistically 18 to 24 months, and more if the steps run one after another instead of in parallel.

If you are already a qualified nurse in India
This matters, because many Indian readers arriving on this page hold a GNM or B.Sc. Nursing qualification already. If that is you, a three-year Ausbildung is probably the wrong route.
The recognition route (Anerkennung) exists to convert an existing foreign nursing qualification into a German one, handled by the competent authority in each Bundesland. It often results in recognition subject to an adaptation period or an examination — far shorter than retraining from scratch. Before you commit three years to a trainee salary, write to the competent authority in the state where you want to work and ask what your qualification would require. More on the difference between the two routes →
German language in India
Your certificate must come from a provider the German authorities recognise. In India the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan network is the most established route, and telc exams are also widely available. A certificate from an unrecognised local language school will not be accepted, however good the teaching was.
Remember the split that catches everyone: B1 is normally the visa requirement, but many nursing schools ask for B2, and some for minimum scores per module. Plan for B2 →
Money, in rupee terms
Training pay under the Caritas AVR 2026 scale starts at €1,599.81 gross per month in year one, rising to €1,762.50 in year three. Tuition is free.
Converting that to rupees is left to you deliberately — the euro-rupee rate moves, and a figure printed here today would be wrong within months. Use a live rate, and budget against German costs rather than Indian ones: your rent, food and transport will be in euros. The full salary and cost-of-living breakdown →
What to do this month
- Start German now, at a Goethe-Institut or another recognised provider, and aim for B2.
- Order official copies of your 10th and 12th standard certificates and transcripts.
- Find a sworn translator for German translations — ask the assessing authority which translators it accepts before paying.
- If you already hold a nursing qualification, email the competent authority in your target Bundesland about the recognition route before anything else.
- Check current German visa appointment availability in your city.
- Ask every employer you contact: which German level does the school require, what are the intake dates, and will Indian document verification be needed?
Common questions
Is an apostille from India accepted in Germany?
No. Germany lodged an objection to India’s accession to the Apostille Convention, so the Convention does not apply between the two countries and an MEA apostille does not make an Indian document usable in Germany. Documents are checked instead through a verification procedure by administrative assistance.
How long does Indian document verification for Germany take?
The German Mission in India gives around six weeks from receipt of the complete request, plus roughly two weeks of postal and courier time in each direction — so realistically two to three months.
How much does the verification cost?
INR 45,000 per application, irrespective of how many documents are submitted, according to the German Mission in India. The costs are reimbursed by the requesting authority, which in practice means the applicant bears them.
Can I request the document verification myself?
No. Only German authorities and courts can initiate it. Ask the employer, school or authority handling your case whether verification is needed and who will request it.
I have a B.Sc. Nursing degree — should I do an Ausbildung?
Probably not. The recognition route for existing nursing qualifications is usually much faster than three years of retraining. Contact the competent authority in the Bundesland where you want to work to find out what your qualification would require.
An agent charges thousands. I charge $10 a month.
