How to Find an Ausbildung Employer Without an Agent

This is the article I most wish I had read first. Almost everything that looks like a gate in this process — the agency, the “placement fee”, the recruiter in your DMs — is optional. The actual barrier is that the openings are advertised in German, under a German job title, on German websites, and most applicants abroad never see them.

Why agencies exist at all

Some are legitimate: they have relationships with employers, they pre-screen candidates, and for an employer they reduce the work of hiring from abroad. Some employers genuinely prefer to recruit that way.

But an agency is a convenience, not a requirement, and the fees charged to candidates — frequently thousands of euros — buy things you can reproduce for free: a list of employers, a CV template, and someone to press send. Meanwhile Germany has a well-documented nursing shortage. You are not begging for a favour; you are a candidate for a role employers are struggling to fill.

Step 1: search in German, with the right words

This one change surfaces most of the hidden inventory. English-language searches return agency landing pages. German searches return actual vacancies.

Use a browser translation extension rather than avoiding German pages. You are going to study in German; reading job adverts in German is useful practice and it doubles your visible market.

Step 2: the four places the openings actually are

1. The Federal Employment Agency apprenticeship database.
   Germany’s official apprenticeship exchange, run by the Bundesagentur für Arbeit. It is free, comprehensive and the closest thing to a complete national list. Search the German job titles above and filter by region.
2. Employer career pages, directly.
   This is the highest-yield route and the one almost nobody uses. Every large hospital group, every Catholic and Protestant care provider, every municipal clinic has a careers section with its training places on it. Make a list of the providers in two or three regions and go through them one by one.
3. The large German job boards.
   StepStone, Indeed Germany and similar carry nursing training places, especially from private providers. Set up saved searches with the German terms and let them email you.
4. Provider associations and church employers.
   Caritas, Diakonie, DRK, AWO and the Johanniter run enormous numbers of care facilities between them, each with its own training places. Their central career portals list openings across hundreds of sites.

Step 3: target regions strategically

Where you apply changes your odds more than how you apply. Two adjustments cost nothing:

• Look outside the big cities. Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt attract the most applicants for the fewest places, and have the highest rents on a trainee salary. Smaller cities and rural providers have more openings and less competition.
• Apply widely, not perfectly. Twenty well-targeted applications beat three agonised-over ones. This is a numbers process at the top of the funnel and a quality process once someone replies.

Step 4: write the first email properly

Keep it short. A German recruiter reading a first-contact email wants four facts fast: who you are, what you want, whether you are viable, and when you could start.

Write it in German even if it is imperfect. An email in careful B1 German says more about your readiness than a flawless English one. The CV needs the German format too →

Step 5: track it, and follow up

Keep a simple spreadsheet: employer, city, contact, date sent, reply, language level required, intake dates. Two reasons. First, after thirty applications you will not remember who asked for what. Second, the language-level and intake columns become your own private map of what the market actually requires — more useful than any article, including this one.

Follow up once, politely, after about two weeks. Then let it go and send more applications.
